About Toto
The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every style of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back was a flop However, they resurface with their fourth album Isolation with two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour helped them become a household name around the world.
After a gap of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is different from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. The album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to change their name and create a new album with a new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band released Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
Music
Toto is an American rock band that enjoyed their greatest success in the eighties. The band was founded by experienced session musicians and has sold more than 40 million albums in the world.
Toto was the first album released by the band in 1978. The album was a huge hit and catapulted toto into international fame. Since then, the band has released fourteen more albums, which have also been hits.
In 1984, Toto wrote their first and, to this day only, movie score for the film Dune. It was a huge project that required the entire group to be involved. Kingdom of Desire was another hit album. After a world tour, Bobby Kimball quit the group. He was replaced by Fergie Frederiksen, formerly of Le Roux. The band continued to push forward with their fifth album, Isolation. The album contained a variety of songs, including "Stranger in Town".
After Isolation, Toto took a break from the spotlight and went on hiatus. This gave the individual members of the band the opportunity to pursue their own projects. In 1996, the band came back together to tour and record an album. It was the first time in more than a decade that all the original members were together on stage.
The next year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time that all of Toto's original members were performing at the same time. Following this, the group disbanded once again. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit show for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in 31 years that all of Toto's founding members were on stage together. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
Tours
Toto is one of the most popular rock bands. They have had hits like "Rosanna," Hold The Line," and "Africa," which has been certified platinum 8X. The group's anthemic arena-rock is influenced by a variety of styles, including progressive rock, world rhythms, jazz, and soul.
The band was hit with several setbacks during their later years, despite their acclaim. In 2002, drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence due to health reasons. Shem von Schröeck took over, but the band wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, Toto decided to take a break from touring after changes to the lineup and a disappointing series of releases. The group returned to touring in 2012 with the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album marked a return to the band's best form, and the tour that came with it featured sold-out concerts in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was made more exciting by the addition of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who both returned to the group.
Toto's music is just as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s and getting new fans with every new generation. Their success has made them a long-lasting part of pop culture, and their live performances are always filled with energy and excitement.
